Conventions of comedy

  • Dirty comedy
  • Party
  • Getting high
  • Attractive girls
  • Summer
  • Upbeat music
  •  bright colours
  • Over dramatic
  • Typical characters shown in exaggeration
  • Parody
  • Young audience
  • Getting drunk

British: Inbetweeners

This films reaches the conventions of upbeat getting drunk, summer, party, dirty comedy and a younger cast this is all seen by the trailer. These conventions are met as they are typical things you see in movies, having these included help the producers get more money in the long run as this is what people like to see in a comedy. Also conventions are meet as seeing other people in movies being happy and having fun makes the audience feel better about their own lives as a way of escapism. Within the first 30 seconds of the trailer these conventions are met this is to grab the audience’s attention so that they can now explain the plot. All these conventions are met as they are going on holiday and this is what young people would do if they were going on holiday with friends. These conventions appeal to the audience as this is what the audience are used to seeing in comedy and they already enjoy it which is why they watch films that are similar however, if the conventions are used all the time it gets boring. These conventions are met so most people can recall the times that they have done similar things this makes it realistic which makes people like it more as they can identify.  A convention that is shown but very lightly is the characters exaggerating for example how they over perform the roles of getting girls and partying. Conventions like the parody aspect isn’t shown this would be done as the plot reaches most of the conventions without having to parody also as they had a plot.

Hollywood: ted

Films tend to try and reach conventions as it makes them reliable as you can make money back on the movie that are made. Furthermore, they use the conventions as they know they are popular which will make their film popular too. This film reaches the conventions as it involves the conventions such as getting high, dirty comedy, bright colours and upbeat music. They help to reach a younger audience as they can relate more also to an older audience as it reminds them about when they were young and how things have changed. Conventions that are broken are things like the exaggerated characters the film lacks the ‘typical characters’ that are shown in other movies. Also the film doesn’t parody anything it is an original story. Also the plot is very different to usual comedies which makes it break most conventions, the story allows fantasy as this would never happen in real life which makes it more funny as its unrealistic. The film also lets adults think back to their childhood which helps the film do better. The trailer starts off looking like a children’s movie as they show their childhood until they show them now they are all grown up this adds an element of comedy as it plays with your expectations. The trailer also includes borrowed identity from other movies and stars this is so they can get the audience from people who like those movies or stars.

How does Wellman show the impact of crime on family and wider society in the film the public enemy?

The impact of crime on the family is seen in the public enemy as you see the relationship between tom and mike. As mike is considered the ‘hero’ whilst mike is the complete opposite they always fight as mike is disappointed in his little brother as mike dislike crime a lot. You could assume that tom does so much crime as he knows that he could never live up to his brother which causes him to strive to make more money than mike for his mother as he never feels good enough. We can see that mike dislikes crime in the beer and blood scene in which mike says ‘there’s beer and blood. Blood of men’ he hates crime as his dad was ironically a police officer and also all the blood split in the world war that he was bravely involved in. Although their relationship is strained due to the presence of crime in Toms life you can see that they still care for each other. On the other hand, we can see that the relationship with his mother brings out the emotional side of him and he wants to make her proud this is shown by the way he doesn’t tell her what he really does he just says he has a job in ‘politics’. However, the main impact will be shown in the end when tom dies as you can see that the external impact will be sorrow as he died to the crime he had committed.

The impact on wider society is seen by the way we can see that most people respect them or are scared of them. We can see that people are scared of them when they go off to a bar to sell the beer and force the man to buy some. As we know they do this in multiple other bars so we can see that the crime elicits fear to most people this would cause the society to be more broken. This causes people in the society who are scared to fear unsecure in their own home as you can see that the police don’t have much involvement into helping to stop the gang until later.

Using a franchise of your choice find a series of film posters from films in the franchise and evaluate

The Hunger Games film series is the 19th highest grossing-film franchise of all-time, having grossed over US$2.5 billion worldwide. The genre is Adventure, thriller and Science Fiction this has been clearly defined to the audience by the colours provided on the poster. As the colours consists of mainly colours like red and black you can identify this as action and a thriller. As the genre is adventure and thriller you can see the target audience is young adults as a use of escapism.

The producers have created an ‘established formula’ in their posters top show that the books and the movie will have a similar narrative by the way the books and the movies both have the same ‘mockingjay’ sign. This helps the audience and you can already tell that if you like the book you will most likely enjoy the film also.  In addition the posters to each films also link by having this same ‘mockingjay’ sign and including the same colours and fonts on each poster. Also the movie posters have similarities by the way they all have the main character on each one of the posters. Another simularity to the film posters is that the main character is always in the center of the screen which makes her the main focus.

The producers have ‘refreshed’ the franchise with each poster by having the main character in a different stance on each poster although she still looks dominant she looks dominant in different ways. They have also changed each poster by changing what she wears for exampple each time she is wearing black but in the last one she wears red this could be to show that she has more passion, intensity and power this shows she has an goal that she is ready to reach and she has perserverence.

Promotion of Films through Social Media

Social Media has been a pivotal role in the promotion of the June 2016 new film, Finding Dory. The producers of Finding Dory, which is the follow on from Finding Nemo, used a variety of social media’s like Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, YouTube and Instagram to help spread the awareness of the film. This has helped to raise the number of people who know about it and subsequently the number of people who are eager to see it. It has helped to build the hype of the film because even though it is set to come out in 2017, the platform of people who want to see it is high thanks to social media. As it is being promoted earlier it gives people more time to talk about it and get excited about going to watch it when it comes out this will cause a lot of people going to watch it as soon as it comes out.

It has constructed a varied audience by putting it on many social Medias. By putting it on Facebook, it is reaching out to a young audience because that is the main social media site that young people who are interesting in Disney films are on. In addition to this as they promote through their own pages on things such as Facebook it help apply to a certain target audience for example the particular people who enjoy watching Disney films will be interested in finding dory. Also this reaches out to older people (parents of young children) because they will be the ones who take them to see it.  By putting it on Twitter, it reaches out to teenagers because that is often seen as their main social media site, here a hashtag can also be made which creates better promotion and by putting it on YouTube, it reaches to a wide age range because most people use it to see trailers before going out and watching movies.
Other than liking and sharing everything Finding Dory related, the audience participation haven’t done much more in terms of promotion. Although, they have been coming up with possible plots and new characters, as well as discussing their views with one another on what they think/hope will happen.

These internet campaigns have been so successful in the promotion of Finding Dory because by hyping the release so early into the production, the producers know that this film is going to be popular. Subsequently, it helps them to know that as it has had such a big and favourable response on social media, it will need to be out in majority cinemas for everyone to see.

Many different temporary posters for Finding Dory have also been released although none have been verified or marked official. This has aided its promotion because they just pop up everywhere which increases its publicity to people who don’t have social media, don’t use social media or just didn’t see the other promotions of the film on their social media. Also this movie is a sequel which means that the promotion is easier as the people who watched finding nemo will already want to watch finding dory.
With so many promotional methods out there, it is more likely for people to find out about the film compared to if only the Facebook account for Finding Dory existed. Most people would find out about this film during trailers that are displayed at cinema before a film, poster, social media and friends.

The start-up music to pretty little liars is very mysterious, this is good as so is the show. This allows you to understand that the show will have a lot of suspense and tension.
The lyrics allow you to also get an in depth meaning of the show as it you start to realise who the main characters are and what is going to happen. Due to the lyrics you can also see that a secret is going to be made this causes you to want to watch it as you would like to know what the secret is.

The music is non-diegetic as the music is in the background and not visible. However this adds a dramatic effect.

                                                         http://tse1.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.Ma592f3ff45f76637644756244e4b4a44H0&w=63&h=105&c=7&rs=1&qlt=90&pid=3.1&rm=2

The colours in this poster are seen to be mostly blue and black with a small indication of white, to me this symbolises the fact that the move might be slightly scary and mysterious. As the sun is creeping out at the side of the world shows that the movie could have a happier ending as there is always a positive, this shows that the movie could also be a thriller.

As the poster has little explanation to the film and is very much based on the name and the massive globe this would show that this move is not the first one you can see this as usually when a movie is already doing well for its self they don’t need to advertise as much as people who have watched the others will automatically want to see this one. The poster also stands out because the audience’s eyes are drawn to the big, bold font

The fact that is has an image of the whole world right in the centre of the poster shows that something that happens in the movie will affect the whole world. This gives the movie more mystery as suspense is created.

This relates to today’s society as it present a sense of escapism, as you are watching the film you will become so wrapped up in the film that you will forget your own stress and worries. This will have a positive an effect on society as people in this generation hardly get any free time as everybody is trying their best to survive financially.
